Salvation Army of Kalamazoo to Kickoff the Kettles With a New Location and a New Mascot
Kalamazoo, MI – November 15, 2013
The Salvation Army of Kalamazoo officially kicked off its’ annual Red Kettle Campaign today with a new kettle location and a new mascot. We are very pleased to have a second Hobby Lobby location in Kalamazoo County for the Red Kettles this year and we are also excited to introduce “Captain Kettle”, said Major Keith Welch, Corps Officer for Kalamazoo County. Captain Kettle made his début at the Kalamazoo Holiday Parade last Saturday and today he had his very first TV appearance. The new interactive mascot appears to be a homerun with kids and families. The Salvation Army of Kalamazoo is looking forward to sharing Captain Kettle with the community throughout the kettle season, which runs through Christmas Eve. Special thanks is in order to Kelly Short, local resident and WMU grad, for assisting in the design and creation of Captain Kettle. In addition, for the second year in a row, The Salvation Army of Kalamazoo is kicking off the kettle season with several Kettle Sponsorships. The 2013 local sponsors include BASIC, Bright Financial Advisors, Metro Toyota, Abode Building Center, Fifth Third Bank, AZON, Lewis-Reed and Allen PC, National Flavors and Teachout & Associates pledging over $27,000 to the annual Kettle Campaign. “We are sincerely grateful to these local businesses for helping us kick off our 2013 Red Kettle Campaign here in Kalamazoo”, said Craig Smith, Director of Development & Volunteers. Several other organizations will be offering Kettle Matches at select locations.
Since October 1st, hundreds of individuals and families have visited our local Salvation Army for Holiday Assistance. An estimated 1,500 households will sign up for these holiday programs with November 22nd being the very last day for registering. The Red Kettles provide the funds necessary to brighten the holidays for struggling families and seniors here in our community. Holiday programs include vouchers for coats, Thanksgiving & Christmas Food Baskets, Food vouchers for seniors and toys for an estimated 4,000 children in our community.
The Salvation Army of Kalamazoo has set a Red Kettle goal this year of $500,000. The annual Kettle Campaign ampaign and Christmas Appeal is the organization’s single largest fundraiser, providing basic need assistance programs and services for all ages during the holidays and all throughout the year. “We humbly ask that everyone in our community share the true spirit of giving during this season by making a donation at any of our 25 red kettle locations, through the mail or on-line. We appreciate the trust of a generous community and we will continue to uphold our promise to “DO THE MOST GOOD” in caring for our friends and neighbors”, said Major Welch. “Merry Christmas and warm wishes for a safe and happy holiday.”
When visiting your favorite retailer this year, be sure to say thank you to the many local bell ringing heroes who face the elements to ensure a great Kettle Campaign. It can be a very chilly experience but many will tell you that it has become an annual tradition. It takes over 5,000 hours of bell ringing to cover all of the kettle location dates and times during the holidays. Unmanned kettles are empty kettles. Please consider helping our local Salvation Army by making a donation or by volunteering to ring the bells this year.
