Keith & Sherrie Welch, Corps Officers
Major Keith J. Welch is the son of Salvation Army officers who served several appointments in Michigan and Indiana. Major Sherrie Welch was raised in Indianapolis and began attending The Salvation Army Shack at age four with her family on the west side of Indianapolis.
Prior to joining The Salvation Army Keith served in the USAF from 1971 to 1975 as an Intelligence Operations Specialist in Omaha, Okinawa and the St. Louis area. He also worked at United Parcel Service for six years while attending college where he and Sherrie met. Keith and Sherrie were married in August of 1981.
The Welch’s entered The Salvation Army School for Officers Training in 1986 and were ordained as ministers in 1988. They have been Salvation Army officers for 25 years. Their appointments include: Wichita, Arkansas City and Hutchinson, Kansas and Holland, MI where they served for 10 years.
Most recently Keith and Sherrie served for five years as the Indiana Divisional Secretary and Divisional Women’s Ministry Secretary respectively. Keith, a proficient writer, has written over 200 articles for Salvation Army publications and, while in Holland, he also freelanced as a weekly columnist for the Holland Sentinel for two years.
Sherrie has an Associates Degree in Practical Ministries and Keith has a Bachelors Degree in Practical Ministries and a Masters in Creative Writing.
Their son, Keith, daughter-in law, Jill, and two sets of twin granddaughters live in Zeeland, Michigan. Their daughter, Kayla, lives in Grand Rapids now finishing her last year at Cornerstone University.
The Welch’s look forward to the opportunities ahead of them here in Kalamazoo. Keith and Sherrie believe that we are all co-laborers in the ministry and they believe in empowering others to take on responsibilities, whether it be staff or volunteer.

Joel Clark, Business Administrator
Joel Clark is a member of The Salvation Army Corps, having become a senior soldier in 1971. He has worked for The Salvation Army since 1978 in seven of the eleven central states. He studied Accounting at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He has a degree in Practical Ministries from Olivet Nazarene University. He is the recipient of The Salvation Army’s Scouter’s Award. He and his wife of over thirty years, have three adult children and one grandchild. They have made their residence here since 1991. Mr. Clark’s parents are retired Salvation Army officers.
CRAIG SMITH, Director of Development & Volunteers
Craig joined The Salvation Army of Kalamazoo in July of 2011 after spending the previous 10 years with the Greater Kalamazoo United Way. Previously he worked for both First of America and National City Bank in various sales roles. Craig is a 1994 graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration. Mr. Smith loves middle schoolers and has volunteered or served on staff as a youth director or leader for the past 15 years. Craig is married to Kimberly Smith who he first met at WMU and they have now been married for 25 years. Their two children, Ashley and Justin, now live in Charlotte, NC and Rome, GA respectively. Ashley is a graduate of Johnson & Wales in Charlotte, with a culinary degree in Pastry and Justin is a WinShape Scholar at Berry College in Rome, GA.
ADAM TOLLERUD, Director of Student & Youth Adult Ministries/Community Center Director
Adam Tollerud was recently hired as the Student and Young Adult Minister, and the Director of Community Center. Adam Tollerud attended the Kalamazoo Corps as a child with his grandparents and went on to study at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights Illinois. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Theology and Church and Ministry Leadership in 2006. After living in Crete, IL for the last seven years he and his family have recently moved back to his home in southwest Michigan. Adam is married to Kerrie Tollerud, RN and they have a four year old son named Judson Hosea as well as a newborn son named Gabriel.
MARIA ALMAGUER, Social Service Director
Maria obtained her Bachelor’s of Science degree from Western Michigan University in 1990, and her License in Social Work in 1995. She previously worked for The Hispanic American Council and Community Aids & Education as a Care Coordinator. She joined The Salvation Army Staff in October of 2000, and was promoted to Social Service Director in 2001. Maria has four adult children and eight grand-children.
